CareerChat UK work with World Skills UK: Design and delivery of CAT the curated careers chatbot, powered by AI and large language models (LLMs)

WorldSkills UK (WSUK) is dedicated to increasing young people’s awareness of apprenticeship and technical education opportunities, challenging outdated perceptions, and driving greater uptake. This is achieved through dynamic online careers content, live events and interactions, and the promotion of skills competitions.

CareerChat shares this commitment, working with partners to ensure “no one is left behind in their search for meaningful learning and work opportunities”. The partnership is built on shared values, a strong commitment to the UK Career Development Institute’s Code of Ethics, and a unique opportunity for individual users of the careers chatbot to speak directly with qualified careers advisers from the national careers services across the UK’s home nations, as and when appropriate.

All round benefits:

  • Extending reach: WSUK builds on its excellent work with educators in schools and colleges and extends this through the chatbot to have more 24:7 interactions with trustworthy content.
  • Rich content: WSUK has an enormous amount of valuable information on its website and via its resources, including video content (see, for instance, the Learning Lab https://www.worldskillsuk.org/learning-lab/). The chatbot is designed to assist individuals to quickly surface the right information, to the right person, when they want and need careers information and advice.
  • UK-wide coverage: WSUK has a customised careers chatbot (CAT) that is programmed for coverage in each of the four home nations. Careers information produced by professionally trained and qualified careers advisers with guardrails embedded within CAT to protect the end user.

WorldSkills UK has produced a complementary “New Careers Advice Toolkit Empowers Young People to Explore Apprenticeship and Technical Career Paths aimed primarily at school and college students aged 13+ upwards. With the recent publication of the government’s Modern Industrial Strategy (2025), there is an urgent need to make careers information and advice more accessible to young people (and adults). This initiative is a step towards bridging the skills and knowledge gap in opportunity awareness.
