AI and Career Guidance: Beyond the Buzzwords

Two years ago, the idea of a “robo-careers adviser” felt futuristic, even far-fetched. Now, it’s very much a live debate. As the original OEB Insights article asked: Will AI transform career guidance – or replace it altogether? Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Career Guidance: Transformation or Extinction? The Coming Age of the Robo-Careers Advisers – OEB Insights
Today, we can confidently say: AI won’t replace human hashtag#careerguidance, but it’s already reshaping how it’s delivered. The question is no longer if, but how well we integrate AI to support meaningful, hashtag#inclusive, and forward-looking hashtag#careerdevelopment.
So, what’s new?
A lot has changed since that original article. Large language models have grown up fast – more conversational, visual, and responsive than ever. For example, today’s AI can scan a CV, interpret it in seconds, and give tailored feedback. There are new immersive tools emerging from hashtag#generative hashtag#AI. Think of an AI virtual assistant that conducts mock interviews in real-time, gives feedback, and adapts its approach based on your learning style or preference. Or interactive roleplay scenarios that simulate what it’s like to work in healthcare, engineering, or creative industries etc. These tools bring hashtag#careers hashtag#information hashtag#advice and hashtag#guidance alive in ways we couldn’t have imagined before 2023.
But don’t ditch the humans
The fear of AI replacing human advisers misses the point. What we need is a smart partnership. AI can scale up access, personalise advice, and handle routine queries. That frees up professionals to focus on what they do best – handling complexity, emotion, and the challenging, human side of career decision-making.
It’s not about machine vs human – it’s about machine with human. And for that to work, we need to keep people at the centre: not just as end users, but as co-designers, testers, and watchdogs of fairness, trust, and relevance. Also, we need to keep a watch on environmental impact factors.
Where we go from here
We’re standing at a crossroads. We can choose to see AI as a threat to guidance – or as a chance to reach more people, with better tools, at the right time in their lives. The challenge isn’t technical anymore. It’s ethical, educational, and strategic.
So let’s make the hybrid model real. Let’s co-design careers support systems where AI amplifies impact, not replaces empathy. And let’s invest in both the tech and the talent to make sure career support remains human-first – even when powered by machines.
